Samhällsbyggnadsbolaget i Norden AB (publ) (“SBB”) and Telia Sweden (“Telia”) have entered into an agreement for the exchange of heating and cooling in SBB’s properties in Haninge Municipality. Among the properties that will be heated with excess heat from Telia’s local data centre are, among others, Haninge Municipal Hall, Söderbymalmsskolan, the Terrassen nursing home and several office buildings.

Telia has had extensive data centre operations in Haninge since the 1980’s. The operations have repeatedly been made more efficient where, among other things, energy use has been halved through in-house developed cooling technology. Telia and SBB have jointly initiated a collaboration to make use of the operation’s excess heat in an environmentally friendly way.

“We are very happy that we have reached the finishing line with this energy project. From a sustainability perspective, it is important that we can use the surplus energy produced in our data centre to heat a number of community service properties in Haninge Municipality, including a school and a home for the elderly. In this way, we reduce the total environmental and energy footprint, which is in line with Telia’s environmental goals,” says Staffan Åkesson, Technical Director, Telia Sweden.

The energy project was put into operation in the middle of July 2022, when SBB built a borehole storage with 166 holes that were built on one of SBB’s properties to dispose of the excess heat produced by Telia’s adjacent data centre. At the same time that Telia’s data centre produces waste heat for SBB’s properties, the data centre will be able to be cooled by the same borehole layer. The cooling corresponds to the majority of the data centre’s cooling needs. The solution takes account of the effects of increased temperatures due to climate change.

The energy plant will reduce the total electricity grid load in Haninge’s central parts, which frees up electricity grid capacity that is needed in case of densification of the urban area and where the demand for charging facilities for e.g. electric cars has increased.

For SBB, the energy project means that roughly 100,000 sqm of property space will become self-sufficient in heat, which corresponds to a saving of approximately 5,600 MWh per year.
